Co-regulation tools when everyone is overwhelmed.
"Let's blow out the candles together."
1. Hold up your fingers (the candles).
2. Take a deep breath in through the nose.
3. Slowly blow them out one by one.
Why it works: Encourages self-regulation through playful modelling.
"Can I give you a big squeeze?"
Offer a deep pressure hug or firmly squeeze their hands (with consent). This provides proprioceptive input which calms the nervous system.
Why it works: Helps reset overwhelmed bodies.
"I can see this is hard. I'm here."
Stop talking. Sit on the floor nearby. Just breathe slowly and loudly so they can hear your calm rhythm.
Why it works: Toddlers borrow adult calm to regulate.
