Wake Window Calculator
Find out how long your baby should stay awake between naps based on their age. Getting wake windows right can help with settling and sleep.
A wake window is the amount of time your baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps. It includes everything — feeding, nappy changes, play, cuddles — from the moment they wake up to when they fall asleep again.
Why do wake windows matter?
Getting the timing right can make a real difference to how easily your baby settles. Put them down too early and they may not be tired enough to sleep. Wait too long and they become overtired — which, counterintuitively, makes it harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Overtired babies often fight sleep, wake more frequently, and have shorter naps. Watching the clock alongside your baby's sleepy cues can help you find that sweet spot.
Sleepy cues to watch for
Every baby is different, but common signs that your baby is ready for sleep include:
- Yawning
- Rubbing eyes or ears
- Looking away or "zoning out"
- Becoming fussy or grizzly
- Jerky movements or clenched fists
- Rooting or wanting to feed for comfort
A guide, not a rule
Wake windows are averages — your baby hasn't read the guidelines! Some babies need slightly more or less awake time. Use these as a starting point and adjust based on what you observe. If your baby consistently fights a nap, they might need a longer wake window. If they're melting down before nap time, try putting them down earlier.
The first wake window of the day is usually the shortest. Wake windows typically get longer as the day goes on.
