Gentle portion guidance

Toddler appetites swing day to day — that's normal. These are simple rules of thumb, not targets. Offer a variety across the day and let your toddler decide how much to eat.

Use their hand as a guide

A toddler portion is roughly the size of their own palm or fist, not an adult's. Start small — you can always offer more.

Aim for variety, not perfection

Across a day, try to include the main groups: starchy foods, fruit & veg, protein (beans, eggs, meat, fish), and dairy or alternatives.

Drinks

Water or milk with meals. Toddlers don't need juice or squash; if offered, keep it well diluted and to mealtimes only.

Snacks

Two small snacks between meals usually works well. Think fruit, veg sticks, toast or plain yoghurt rather than sweets.

Batch-cook & save-time ideas

Cool food quickly, refrigerate within an hour or two, and use within 2 days — or freeze in toddler-sized portions. Reheat until piping hot all the way through, then let it cool to a safe temperature before serving.

General guidance only — not dietary or medical advice. Speak to your health visitor or GP about your child's specific needs, allergies or feeding concerns. Always check meals for allergens and choking risks (cut food into suitable pieces, avoid whole nuts and whole grapes, and stay with your toddler while they eat).
